My car will only let gps be operated when vehicle is at complete stop. I could understand for safety but the passenger could operate it.

It's called a safety feature for every one around you.But you can have it removed by a Professional audio shop in your area.The e-brake thing doesn't always work and can wear your brakes out over work your tranny if you got rear disc brake especially.Even tho it doesn't feel like the e-brake is on it's still on just not full pressure.

well don't say I told you to do this if you crash... but what I do is press the E-brake down slightly to the point were its not rubbing but the light is on and it will work fine.

otherwise you can take your car to certain audio places to do it, but not all cuz its kind of illegal

When GPS shopping, first things first.

1. Turn-by-turn vs Text-to-speech.

A unit that has "turn by turn" will say "turn right in 100 yards"

text to speech will say the street name, "turn right on east plano parkway." Text to speech always trumps turn by turn.

2. Maps that are up to date.

Sure you might find a tomtom for $89, but it a discontinued model? Are the maps up to date or from 2006? It's worth knowing that when you purchase a unit, no matter what brand, the maps be 2008 or newer. Since the maps are all pre-loaded, set the expectation that you will more than likely have to update your maps once a year and costs $80-no matter what the brand. That's just what the mapping companies charge.

3. Traffic

If you don't need it, don't get a unit that has it. Traffic is a subscription, and costs money yearly. Sometimes you'll find a unit with a trial which in nice if you just want to check it out.

4. Voice Recognition/bluetooth

Unless youâ™re totally set on these features, don't worry about 'em. They'll set you back a few hundred dollars...on top of the price of the unit.

5. If all this sounds goodâ¦

check out a brand called Mio (me-o). They are the second larges GPS company in the world. All of the Moov series units have txt to speech, are basic, easy to use, feature rich, and affordable. As if that's not enough, they'll recalculate a route (say if you miss an exit) in 4 seconds or less. Theyâ™re often on sale at Radio Shack. And Bonus, they come with a free 2009 map. No other product can compare ;)

Do you need any specific features like mp3 player, bluetooth, etc? If not go with the Garmin 205 i just bought one the other day for $131. Garmin is the best gps system in my opinion. You may pay a little more for it over Magellan and Tomtom but it is worth is faster route calculations, finds the satellites faster, etc...

The Nuvi 205 has a 4.5 out of 5 star rating among the customers that bought it. It is definitely worth checking out.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question correctly, but are you trying to track where your car is from your home computer? This is not how the GPS receiver in your car works. In your car, the device only receives signals from satellites, which it uses to determine its position. There are computer programs that can do the same thing with an attached receiver. For example, if your car doesn't have GPS, you can carry around your laptop and a GPS receiver and map your location.

You would have to talk with the company that sold you the GPS. Because they give out the username and passwords.

I'm looking for a decent car gps navigation system that's under or around $250.

It will be replacing my Magellan Roadmate 360, which has some serious issues. First, it doesn't have retail stores beyond restaurants and gas stations listed in the points of interest database. Second, it requires you to put in the township/district instead of the real city or town name when putting in an address, which is pretty impossible to determine beforehand.

So basically, I'm looking for something with a big points of interest database and easy address input.

Garmin I believe I got the C320. Its like 240. You can get at walmart it includes the mount and everything.

I am looking to buy my fiancee a GPS for her birthday. We also love golf and have considered getting a GPS for golfing alone. That said, is there a GPS out there that could double as a "most of the time" in-car GPS system and then could get pulled easily from the car and put into our golf cart at the course? How do you get lost on a golf course.

My suggestion is to buy separate devices for each use since the golf caddie (sky caddie) is specifically designed for a golf course and downloadable software for several courses and the navigation GPS for travel (auto) has maps and destination points specific for road navigation.

I suggest a Garmin GPS for the auto as they have several handheld and auto mountable models to choose from as well as good customer support and updates.

As for the golf GPS I suggest the Sky Caddie SG4 model since it is waterproof and has an SD slot for programmable updates and other options.

Plan on spending $350.00 + for each as there's no cheap way out on this if you want quality and reliability. No one likes to be lost or stuck in traffic if they have a GPS that isn't functioning properly or doesn't have the features available because you went the inexpensive route.

To be useful on the golf course as well as do the the car GPS navigation I'd suggest teaming a GPS enabled PDA such as the HP iPAQ hw6515 (http://gpstekreviews.com/category/gps-pdas/) with the appropriate software - eg. I would recommend that you use a removable device like Tom Tom or others. You can use your 12v outlet for power and you can use it outside the vehicle as well. Best Buy or Circuit City. The removable device is safer in the sense that you can remove it when not in use and less chance of getting it stolen.

Depending on your physical location, you may wish to look for authorized factory GPS dealers first in your area than look for a dealer that is also recommended by the factory for installation of GPS unit.

You'd have to contact the particular manufacturer. As of yet, there is no universal GPS navigator map format. (And you'd have to get a computer-readable map, and you'd have to annotate it with accurate Lat/Long data.)

I'm planning on purchasing a gps in-car system. I would like a really good one, but I don't want to just throw ;my money away. Which system can I get the most bang for the buck?

TomTom One is a good one , they run about $250 now . Garmin , TomTom and Magellan are the the most well bought brands . I have the TomTom One and its very accurate and reliable. Get the base models in any particular brand , because added features you may never use drive up the price.

For the most "bang for your buck" you have to look at Mio. They are a company that makes GPS systems. They will have the most features for the lowest price. They have some fairly cheap GPS units that will get you a basic GPS plus some features that only more expensive units will have.

One of the models that you could look at is the Mio C310X. It is a really nice unit and works really well. It also has a mp3 player in it which is a plus. It is last years model so i don't know how easy it is for you to find one but they will be a great deal. They used to sell them for around $200-$250. This unit compares to units in the range of $350-$500 so it is the best for the money.

Check out that unit and the newer Mio units... Circuit city and office max are the only two places i can remember that carry Mio.

Just like Colanth already indicated, it is unfortunately not possible to import stops into a GPS unit built into cars.

However, if you use MapPoint on your desktop for trip planning, you could consider getting a small inexpensive "netbook". Such a mini-laptop can be purchased for around $200. Add a small USB or Bluetooth GPS unit for about $30 or $40, and you can use your MapPoint, with all the stops, right in your car or truck, for GPS navigation.

What is the best GPS for car use in the US?

I'm planning to do a road trip across the US and plan to buy a top-of-the-line GPS unit. I would like something with touch screen, speech capabilities, traffic information, MP3 and bluetooth capability, etc. I will primarily use this for my car but I do have a motorcycle too. But I'd rather have a better car GPS than one that is car+motorcycle friendly if I had to choose between the two. Two models I am looking at are the Garmin StreetPilot 2820 and the Garmin Zumo 550. I'm leaning toward the Zumo 550 as it seems to be better than the StreetPilot 2820 in almost every way. Can anyone out there shed some light on why I would opt for the StreetPilot 2820 instead of the Zumo 550 or why I should go with a different brand/model? I'm a first-time car GPS buyer and have seen neither Garmin product in person. (All of the stores around here carry only the lower end models.) Thanks!

I have a Garmin Nuvi 350, which most of the features you asked about except bluetooth. The Nuvi 360 has bluetooth capability so you can connect it to your cell phone for hands-free use. The reviews on it are all very positive, one of the unique features being that the voice will read the names of streets, saying "turn right on main" instead of "turn right at the next street." Sorry I don't know much about the other models, but I've been really happy with my Nuvi.

If you want top of the line i suggest the 2820 as it not only comes with bluetooth but is also expandable with xm satelite radio functionality. It also plays mp3s and audio books. Top of the line stuff.

If you are driving across the country you would do better with the 2820's AC power source since the zumo has only has a rechargable lithium battery that lasts anywhere between 4 and 8 hours. Zumo's great for short trips, but for continuous use over the long haul the 2820 wins out in my opinion.

I really would like to understand the difference between Car GPS and Trecking GPS. Are they similar?

I mean here from the point of syncing with satellites. I saw some trecking GPS that sync with 12 ( 12 channels). Does that mean that they are more sensitive than Car GPS?

Is it possible to use car GPS for trecking :-)

Or are there GPS that can be used for both applications at the same time, and may be also for sailing, let's say :-)

If they are identical hardware-wise, does that mean one can use maps files for cars on a trecking GPS, or vice-versa?

I think the main difference is the power source and the software that is loaded. Car systems will be set up to use 12VDC, and typically be hard-mounted into the car. Trekking (portable) models will be battery operated, so voltage would be anywhere from 3-9VDC. Since a person will have to carry it, the portable GPS will typically be smaller and lighter.

Regarding software, Car units will be more likely to have better information on roads, addresses, attractions etc while the hiking model will feature land features etc.

All the GPS units I have seen use as many satellites as possible. It needs at least 3 to pinpoint where you are, the more satellites it 'sees', the more accurate it will be.

You can you a car GPS for hiking, but you will need to bring a 12VDC power supply... and car batteries are pretty heavy ; )

A better application would be to get a portable model and use that in your car, however I don't think the hiking models typically give you turn by turn instructions.

but if you buy a GPS system for you car. is it something that you have to keep paying for (kind ofl like when you buy a cell phone, and you have to keep paying if you want to use it)

Once you buy the unit the signal for directions is free for the life of the unit. Things you do have to pay monthly for is if you want traffic updates. Also the maps become updated so eventually you have to pay for the new maps which cost between $50-$100

You will not have to pay to use a GPS unit that you have purchased. Let's hope it stays that way and hope the GPS manufacturers never come up with that idea anytime soon.

I was wondering because I feel that new technologies that have recently been released, which allow someone to place a GPS tracker in a car, and track where that car has been online, are an alarmingly extreme invasion of privacy. What are the best places in your car to look for a possible tracking device? And what is your opinion on the whole idea of tracking locations of cars via GPS?

I am sure there are things like you are suggesting, however you can place a chip anywhere on or in a vehicle and use it to track the car. While it could be considered as a violation of privacy, unless you are doing something illegal, you really probably have nothing to worry about. Unless you are underage and your parents want to track you, then its not a violation of privacy because you are a minor. (if you are underage, that is.)

The easiest way is to disconnect the power. If you don't know where it is or what wire it gets it's power from then look for the antenna. The antenna can't be very hidden. It has to see the sky to receive the satellite signals. Cover it with something. The famous tinfoil trick would work. It doesn't take much to block the weak GPS signals.

i bought a car on financing in canada that has GPS that can actually shut off the car and track it wherever i go. i find this an invasion of privacy. I received a remote to enter codes (such as 999 9999 when the car turns off so I have 24 hours to move it..)

The GPS is connected straight to your OBD2 connector that is located directly under the steering wheel. It looks like a plug for a nintendo. I know that you can disconnect it but as far as the vehicle running it just depends on how they wired it to your ECU / ignition system. Don't listen to agent he is talking about lo jack. Not a financial institutions system to track down/recover their assets/vehicles.

No because it is used by law enforcement to find stolen cars and cannot be tampered with.

I remember hearing Hulk Hogan installing a GPS tracker in his daughters car and being able to remotely to shut off her car. That got me thinking if you knew your car was stolen, and you had a GPA tracker installed you could notify the police or remotely shut the car down yourself. Is this possible?

Have one in my car (although I don't believe it's tied into the engine... it might be... idk). Doesn't cost that much and they recover the car (on average) 15 minutes after being notified.

lots of new cars have this from the factory. i think onstar can even do this if you can prove you're the owner of the car. there are aftermarket systems available that usually install under the seat that allow people to track their vehicles online. they're not always popular because most people don't want people to be able to see where they're at or where they went or even how fast they're going.

yes its possible. police units install these types of devices in what they call bait cars. they put the car in a shady neighborhood and if someone steals it the car can be shut off and the doors locked so the criminal is locked inside.

A Basic Understanding of GPS

GPS is the abbreviated form of Global Positioning System. Does anyone here have installed or know more about this GPS car tracking device. I am planning to install one in my car as i do go to malaysia often. It helps us to locate our car if its lost. If anyone has installed this device, could you share with me the pros and cons.?

pros....if you travel out of town/to new places a lot then it helps you from getting lost

How does it work? What power source does it run off? Does it display an accurate listing like a normal GPS device does?

And how does the bluetooth feature work? Do you need online access on your mobile phone? Would love to hear from anyone cheers

I have never heard of this product but I have installed many of the TrackStick GPS Car Tracking Systems for my commercial customers and they work great plus they have been around awhile also you can read about them at their site and if interested you can buy them off ebay.....

Well, look for the GPS antenna.

This antena can be tiny, the size of an ipod or less, rounded, in a place where it can see direclty to the sky, maybe is hidden or dissimulated in the dashboard.

wouldnt be suprised y u ask? but from some other things that i noticed about them i doubt that they would do thay. dont think they are smart enough to do that

most all rental cars have them,easy way to keep eye on car for them.its legal they dont have to tell you

my used town car has a gps tracking system on it that the person i bought it from installed. for some odd reason he wont tell me where it is. so i took it to a body shop and they told me where the antenna is but the cant find where the gps trackers brain is. they told me it would be best to just cut the antenna. the thing is i want to be able to use the antenna when i park my car somewhere im not familiar with. so i just want to be able to turn it off and on. so they told me to find a material that can interrupt the signal. can anyone help????

This question really does not make sense. First, if someone can find the antenna, it is just a matter of following the antenna cable to the GPS engine?

If this is a tracking system, then parking your car somewhere that you are not familiar with will not help you at all, I guess unless you have the software for the device and carry a laptop around with you that is capable of receiving the transmission? It would be much easier in this case if you do actually have a GPS engine on the car is to find it (follow the antenna lead or the unit would have to have power) and put in a switch to turn it on or off

hi, i need the most efficient brand of GPS online tracking device that i can place on my daughter's car (long story of why later) to be able to track her trips online in real time. I would prefer one that is not detectable by her and one the i will be able to track online in real time (can be hours off since we often need to know when and where she is immediately) thanks!

That's illegal and an invasion of her privacy if she doesn;t know about it...gust give her time limits before handing her the keys to her car.
